Mr. W. G. Crawford, returning officer Sor Pahiatua, who had a paralytic seizure last Wednesday, is improving in ; health.—Press wire. ' New Zealand and its colleges nave been honored in the person of Professor Rutherford, who has been awarded the Nobel prize as the person who has dene most during the year to advance the study of chemistry. In 1906 Sir W. Crookes received this honorable distinction and handsome pecuniary recognition. Sir W. Ramsay is the only other British citizen who has been thus selected from among the great chemists of the world. Among other prizemen are- the great Frenchman, Professor | Moissan, and the still more famous . Arrhenius. Professor Rutherford, who is still a young man, is thus placed among those whom the scientific world recognises as the most deserving, and is extremely likely to win further laaTcls in future years. This £BOOO prize iwill give him added opportunity for the research in which he has already distinguished himself, and we may hop that New Zealand will yet be notablas producing the greatest chemist of the twentieth centurv. That in this new country a great scientist can be reared among congenial and fostering surroundings, and that in our educational institutions he can lay the groundwork of his knowledge, is a national honoT ot which every New Zeahmder may justly feel proud.—Auckland Herald.
