Smith, mining engineer, Dunedin, have applied for the water rights of 150 Government lieada at Toaoha Canyon, 'Westland, for hydro-electric power purposes, and 100 heads at Hokitika river Marrows for mining purposes. The utilisation of water power for mining purposes in Westland is considered most favorable, and large areas of auriferous country suitable for this system of.mining are available.
