U. l)aly, Whelch states he feels fairly well now, and is training hard. He' had secured a pacer named Hancock, who is a very fair man. They do a. course daily, doing 12 miles. They keep this up till the last week and thence once daily over the course. The tide at the time of tlie race will he nearly low, and the two contestants will 'have to scull against it. Whelch ia sill going down in weight. He now scales Bst llllw stripped and will row at 9st 101b. He states that Thorougngood is Curving a hard job to get his| stake money. The papers comment on the way he is being treated compared i ir.'ch Akaroa's liberality to Wh'clc'h. Two steamers "will follow the. race, -nd two lie on the course. At a regatta today Whelch and Thoroughgood (sea-.) and Hancock (28sec) have been entered in a. handicap race of two miles.. Opinions aro Very varied as to the big race, many thinking Whelch is too small tc beat a big man.
