ZULU CHIEF SENTE.v i) FOR HIGH TREASON. Received 12, 10.16 p.m. Durban, November 12. Oakyama was sentenced *6 seven years' hard labor for high treason and acts of rebellion in conjunction with the chief Banibaata, Judge Smith remarking that there was no evidence that lie acted at the direct or indirect instance of Dinizulu.

Mr. Jenkins, late Agent-General for South. Australia, was entertained at a complimentary dinner. The Hon, W. Reeves and other Agents-General were present. Earl Jersey, who presided, presented Mr. Jenkins with a watch and jewellery prescribed by his friends. Replying, Mr. Jenkins advocated a strong Commonwealth immigration policy. The. greatest protection would be to fill the country with British people.
COLONIAL SECURITIES. London, November 11. In the House of Commons Mr. A, C. Beck asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether lie would consider w, advisability of giving small investors facilities for investing ia remunerative colonial securities while making it plain that it was the Colonial Govcraments and not the Homo Government that guaranteed such securities. Mr. C. E. Hobhouse, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, replied that such facilities ought to be provided by the colonial Governments themselves.
DINIZULU'S TRIAL. Durban, November 11. The Zulu chief Dhizulu has pleaded not guilty to the indictment. There arc twenty-three counts alleging en- 1 courageraont of rebellion, collecting of arms and harboring of rebels.
THE EASTERN EXTENSION . CABLE. London, November 11. Sir John Barry, chairman of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, addressing a meeting of shareholders, referred to the "very unfair competition" of the Pacific Cable Company. He complained of the arbitrary action of the Australian Government in regard to the Tnsmanian cable charges, which was the latest tastaqc* <-f f "o unfair and Wile treatment the comi|,::i- had. received since the Pacific cable-had beta abolished.
