The Rev. Smith said two courses were open to him—one to demand libel; the other to throw himself oa the sense of the justice of the Assembly. He had to make up his mind on the spur of the imoment, and he would decide to allow the position to be judged on its merits. He stated ins reasons for writing thej book, and defended what he had writ-' ten. He said, in a lengthy speech, vnit he could not use all the arguments that would naturally strengthen his position. After quoting authorities in support of his position he said were the motion proposed by Rev. Jolly carried, it would mean the end of his association with tlie Presbyterian Church. Hjft would be very sorry to take such a step because he loved his church. He was prepared to abide by his convictions. He would stand or fall by the book.
