FIRE BRIGADE BALL.

The Theatre Royal was packed to , overflowing last night on the occasion , of the holding of the Fire Brigade's 1 Ball. All the available dancing-spaco was taken up, while the dress circle and stage were crowded with onlookers. The Theatre was brilliantly illuminated and gaily decorated with bunting. The lloor was in the very be.st of order for dancing, and splendid music was rendered by Mrs. A. George's orchestra. Everyone seemed to spend a very pleasant time. During the early part of the evening the juveniles had the floor, and it was evident that the youngsters had I received a good deal oi' careful training, and Miss Humphries and her colleagues (Misses Bedford and Hanna) arc to lie congratulated upon the success attained. The children were all prettily attired, the fancy costumes being representative of various characters. The grand march, in which about three bundled children took .part, was exceedingly pretty and effective. The various competitions resulted as under, the prizes awarded being presented by Superintendent F. Bellringer and Mrs. Dockrill:— Best girl's fancy costume, "Cupid," Mias [ Dora Hawke; most original girl's costume, "Witch," Miss Dorothy Martin; best boy's fancy costume. "Clown," Master Leo Kendall; most original boy's costume, "Fireman," Master Teddy Lambert. Mrs. L. W. Alexander's special prize was awarded to the costume representing "Ruination." This costume wis worn by Miss Clarice Moverley. Mesdames R. Cock, L. W. Alexander, and W. Pellew officiated as judges in the competitions. Miss R. Knott played the music for the children's dancing during the rehearsals, Miss 'Kirby supplying the music last evening. Before returning home the youngsters were marshalled into the supper-room, where they thoroughly approbated the dainties set before them. The adult dancers afterwards took the floor. The duties of M.'sC. were capably carried out by Messrs. Ted Humphries, A. Courtney, and W. Way. The supper was a special feature, as is always the case when supplied by the ladies of New Plymouth. The tables were tastefully decorated by Mrs. F. E. Clarke. The following were the committee:—Mesdames G. Tiseh, Fred. Bellringer, E. M. Smith, H. Moon, Back, B". Richards, H. Ford, R. Jury, F. E. Clark?, Ryan, Coleman, Simmons, W. Saddler, and Misses Humphries, Nichol, N. Hanna, Bedford, and Kirby. Mrs. Dockrill acted as president. A committee of gentlemen worked hard. We understand that about £SO was taken at the doors, in addition to the tickets soid outside.
