THE C.J.C. MEETING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. No less than 59 bookmakers have taken out licenses to bet on the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan meeting, 25 of whom will operate in the paddock and 34 in the outside enclosure, TURF TOPICS.
(By '•Moturoa.") With twenty-one horses still in tine New Zealand Cup there appears every likelihood of a record held going to the post for to-day's race. A splendid crowd of (horses has paid up the final payment, and the issue is generally regarded as being very open. Training operations at lticcarton have been very interesting during the week, Master Dclaval, Apa, Glenullin, and Heoithorn showing the best work. The staying powers of Zimmerman, Signor, 'Frisco, and Muliuta require no recounting, and there is good reason to expect a great contest at Hiccarton to-day. Of the locally-trained pair Glenullin has been showing better form than Uhlando, and if in a galloping humor would probably s'how up prominently. Aucitlamlers will not hear of Master 'iJela vat's defeat, anil, considering that the Seaton Delaval gelding carried flat !Jlb into second place behind 'Frisco (7st B'Alb) last year, and that he has been winning races this spring
their champion deserves more than passing attention. 'Frisco has been troubled with a split hoof, and Apa wi'l probably be the. stable's select. The redoubtable Zimmerman is always fit for a sound performance, and carries
weight well. Twenty horses still remain in the Stewards' Handicap, including such bril-
liant sprinters as Gold Crest, Grenadier, Bobrikoff, Penates, and Armlet. The top-weight won with Bst 31b last year, and has gone on the right way since _ then. He has the advantage-oHTenkins' Flitaway has been bowling along.Jreel.y daring the week, and her record of three starts, three wins, includes the Autumn Nursery Handicap, in which the daughter of" Clanranald gave Armlet four pounds and a beating over five furlongs in linin 2sei\
A smart crowd of two-year-olds will contest the Welcome Stakes. Provocation beat Expansion over four furlongs on Thursday morning in 47 3-ssec, and is in great form. Aborigine has frightened a good number out of tilie Great Northern Guineas, and a poor field is expected to face the barrier.
Of the hurdlers Hautapu and Reservoir have been winning lately. Pharos appears in the jumping events. It is a rare thing to see Paritutu carrying only 7st 121b in a ten-furlong race, aud one wonders whether the handicapper lias not taken a liberty with the Castor gelding. Tan San beat Aborigine over a mile on the sand on Thursday, and Te Aroha and Lochbnhie ate a'pair who are moving nicelv. Owners are reminded that all nomma-
tions in connection with the Waitara meeting, which takes place on 3rd December, close to-night with tile secretary, Mr. H. Sptirdle, at. fl o'clock. The telegraph office closes at. 8 p.m. Good stakes are offered, and .Mr. J. E. Henrys will do the handicapping. This scribe had a: look n t the course at Sentry Hill on Thursday last, and the track looks in good condition. The substantial increase in stakes should draw large nominations.
