OPENING THE MAIN TRUNK.
By Telegraph.--l'ress Association. Taiih..u limn, I'riday. After a .tedious night journey, the spociai Ministerial train reached Manganuateo at 8.30 this morning. The 1-lou, W. Hall-Jones brielly introduced the Prime Minister in a speech of conspicuous modesty, reviewing the pait history of the railway. Mr. Peacock, chairman of the • Auckland Railway League, congratulated the Oovcrninent on the'completion of the line, and deprecated the pretence of parochial prejudice between Auckland and Wellington. He congratulated Mr. Hall-Jones on his appointment as High Commissioner. Mr. David Nathan, in a very eD'ertive speech, reviewed the past history of the line since me first spade of the Manawatn railway was driven ii; 188(1 He had taken a keen interest in, railwav matters, so that to-day's function had a special significance for him. Sir Joseph Ward' was beset by a body of photographers as lie drove the last 'spike. In a very telling speech, he reviewed the history of the railway, and emphasised tlie necessity for enlarged railway facilities in connection with tlie completion of settlement. A big crowd manifested great enthusiasm throughout tie proceedings.
