A BRUTAL ASSAULT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. 1 Auckland, Last Nignt. | Robert Harris, an American negro, was charged at the Police Court; this afternoon with assaulting Sidney Thomas Poole by biting him on the cheek so as to cause him actual bodily harm. In outlining the case for the prosecution, Scrgt. Hendry said that accused was cook on a coastal steamer, and the victim of the assault was a fireman on the same boat. Harris had gripped Poole in his arms and bitten a piece out of nis cheek. Harris admitted that he had "used his teeth," but said he had done so in self-defence, as he had been assailed from every side. Accused was sentenced to two months' imprisonment. ALLEGED INDECENT ASSAULT. Christchurch, Last Night. At the Magistrate's Court to-day a man mimed Robert Baxter denied a charge of indecently assaulting a girl five years old. After the evidence for the prosecution hud been taken accits-jd reserved his defence, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed.
