FEMALE SHOP-LIFTERS. By Telegraph.— Trots Association. Dunedin, sturdily Night. This morning at the Police Court, Georgina Dusiirtfie and Susan Watt were charged with a, series of thefts from drapery shops. The articles which formed the subject of the charges were a lady's costume and drill shirt from the Drapery Supply Association, a pair of trousers from tile Cash Trading Company, a pair of boots from H. Skinner, and two drill blouses, a tea pot, shirt, and a piece of plate from some person unknown. DcsarUie pleaded guilty and Watt was found guilty. The .police stated that both were und'>r the influence of liquor when arrested. Accused were remanded till Monday to see if some arrangement could he made with the Salvation Army Home.
AN APPEAL DISMISSED. Wellington, Last Night. At the Supreme Court yesterday, - Mr Justice Cooper delivered his reserved judgment in a ease in which John Franldyn Smith appealed against his conviction on a charge of sly-grog sell- 1 ing in Wellington. The ground of thu appeal was that the evidence of two probationary constables upon which Smith's conviction was based was nutcorroborated by any of the witnesses. 1 The appeal was dismissed.
Christchurch. Last Night. Charles Edward Breyenton, the principal in the Granmer Square shooting atl'air, who was admitted to the hospital some weeks ago in a critical condition, will be discharged on Monday, lie will subsequently be charged with having attempted to commit, suicide. . Christchurch, Saturday Night. Jn chambers at the Supreme Court yesterday, Mr. J. C'assidy applied; for a writ of prohibition to set aside the coiviction against Mr. G. Rankin, assistant at Messrs. Simpson and Williams, for having sold u copy of "Anna Lombard." The case has arisen in connection with the recent prosecutions of booksellers for selling novels of an immoral character. His Honor 31r. Jus-', tice Denniston decided to hear the ay ] plication on November 11. Christchurch {Saturday Night. A stowaway was discovered on beard the steamer VWikare on the passage from Wellington to Lyttclton, ana on arrival at the latter port he wa» given in custody. The man, whose name was Duncan Robertson, appeared at the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon, and was charged with travelling on the steamer without first paying his fare, and also with intent to evade payment of the fare. He was ordered to pay the amount of the I are, 12s (id, in default 24 hours' imprisonment.
