Connett, chairman of the Harbor Board, and Mr. Newton King represented the Board, ,and the former explained the Bill, particularly the provisions lor the. payment of interest without the necessity for striking a rate, lie expressed the opinion that the carrviug of the poll and the completion of'tire harbor were of the utmost importance to the whole of 'iaranaki. ami urged the ratepayers to be >uiv to go to the poll lo authorise the loan. A vote of thanks to -Mr. Council and a similar compliment to the chair terminated the meeting.

With a view to infusing more vitality into the New Plymouth Caledonian Society, it is proposed to hold a re-nnion )f Scots and niem,bt,„a 01 mo Society it a first annual dinner on Si. Andrew's Jay, November 80. The movement has jeen greatly assisted by receipt of mormation from Messrs S. U Humphries md Co., the local wine and spirit mer•hants, that Messrs. Mackic anil Co. Distilleries, Mil., of Glasgow, have in.trueted them to supply free to the So;iety, on .Messrs. Macule and Co.s bemlf. a special line of "White Horse" ivhisky now on its way from Scotland, the "White Horse" people have also sent the Society through Messrs. Hum phi'ics Mill Co. several tins of haggis, a large tin "f peats, aad a quantity -f Scotch shortbread. Tire peat is utilised For perpetuating an old Scotch custom, of (icing carried, lighted, round the banquctting table on a tray, Hie peatreek permeating the whole room, with the—to the Scots—\vell-kno\ui odor of peat smoke. The secretary of the So- ' ciety also received yesterday from the proprietors of Hie Weekly Scotsman, Kdinburgli, a large parcel of heather in first-class condition. The Society hopes to make the dinner an annual function, and it should tend to materially increase the prosperity of the Society in New Plymouth.
