FIRES.
FHU: LIN TIIF MANUKA. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dum-din, Last Niglii.. A fire, was discovered in No. -i hold on board the -Manuka about 111.4J p.>i. on Saturday. The crew had been paid off during the day. and lumpers knocked oil' working the cargo about 10.:)0 jun. 31r. Ulley, chief officer, found smoke issuing from No. i hold when lie came on board for the night, and fortunately all the ollicers and engineers were on board, most of them being in bed. T'liey turned out promptly and soon had the lire under, but, owing to the ileus,: smoke the Tire brigade was summoned on the assumption that the lire was serious. It appears to liavu originated amongst some straw and old canvas. None of the cargo was damaged, and the loss is small.
Wanganui, Saturday. At .1 o'clock this morning an outbreak of fire occurred in an unoccupied old six-roomed house. The tire was extinguished (|iiickly, damage lieing confined to one room. The circumstances are suspicious, and coupled with oKivv recent outbreaks of a similar kind tend to confirm the suspicion that an incendiary is at work.
