MINE ON FIRE.
FIRE-FIGHTERS OVEKCOiIE UY XUk FUMEri. Received 21. 11.30 p.m. Sydney, October 21. A fire was discovered this morning in the 200 ft level of the Block U mine.' Broken liili, close to the Proprietary boundary. One hundred ami fifty men are idleOwing to the smoke, and gas, large quantities of waier have been poured into the mine. A number of lire ugliters was overcome by the fumes. THE FIRE PRACTICALLY UNDER CONTROL. HEROIC WORKReceived 22, 0.55 a.m. Sydney, October 21. Latest reports state ITQat the fire has been beaten back and is practically fal hand, hut the gas is very had. The work of subduing the fire is conducted with great difficulty. The figWers were rapeatedlv overcome by the fumes. One of them '(Eddy) was missing. He was rescued in an unconscious condition. Heroic efforts were made to reach the place where Eddy was stationed, but the gas drove the rescuers back.
