THK HURI'XUI SEAT. By Telegraph,—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A telegram to the Press Association from Kaikoura states that private reasons prevent -Mr. A. W. Rutherford from complying with the requisition to contest the Hurnnui seat tt t the general election. WELLINGTON SOUTH SEAT. Wellington, Last Nignt. Mr. R. A. Wright, oi Wright und Carman, printers, announces his intention of contesting the Soutfi Wellington seat at the coming general election. Mr Wright has been a resident of Wellington for 27 years. He is opposed to the present Government.
THE TUAi'EKA SEAT. Naseby, Last Night. Dr. Chappie, candidate for Tuapeka, iddressed a large meeting to-night. He Save a general support to the legislation of last session, though he believed the Arbitration Act will require considerable amendment. He favored tOic absolute majority system in preference to the second ballot, which, he believed, would not work satisfactorily. He advocated increased population for tih>; Dominion . "We should be careful to «ioose tile class of immigrants," lie said. "In one batch of new arrivals only 10 per cent, of the people were fanners." He spoke strongly concerning the need of irrigation in Central Otago and other local wants, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. DI'NEDJX SOUTH SEAT. Diinedin, Last Night. Mr. I{. Slater, who was recently announced as a candidate for the Dunedin South seat, has decided not to stand.
