INTERNATIONAL GALLOON RACE
AN EXCITING INCIDENT
Deceived 12, 11.3 p.m. Berlin, October 12. The Gordon Bennet international balloon race started at Berlin yesterday. Twenty-three balloons, with three daV»' provisions, competed. The American balloon Conqueror, contaming A. Forbes and 11a ior Herav shot up 40,000 feet. The spectators' were horrified to see the envelope slip up anil the balloon drop like a stone Then the envelope bulged into a parachute, slackening the rat- of descent, tile wrecked mass disappearing behind houses in the suburb. It was soon ascertained that the envelune hull" over one side of a building, balancing ths basket on the other. Forbes and Hersv were unhurt. They were assisted up to the roof, thence through the Iran<loor.
Forbes, interviewed, said that, fearing a drop, he cut. away thirty bags <-c ballast, Hersy threw out evervthin<> possible. The whole incident showed how safe (? unsafe) balloonin" really was. ■ *
