MAKETAWA DAIRY COMPANY.
I The annual meeting of the above company took place on Monday evening, when over tiftv shareholders we:e present. Mr. J. Brown, chairman of directors, occupied tlie chair. The chairman moved the adoption 01 the report and balance-sheet, and in doing so referred to the fact that for the Erst time in the history of the factory he had to point to a reduction i-i their year's output amounting to about fourteen tons, for which, however, the
unprecedented]}' dry season fully a<counted. The quantity of milk required to make a pound of butter and the overrun were exactly the same as last your, llheir manager, Mr. Gl L. Johnston, had, through ill-health, 10 take a trip" to the Old Country, and he had obtained I leave for the necessary time, and in* I
( the speaker) was pleased to say, from J letters received,. Mr. Johnston spoked
very hopefully of the result of' his visit, and hoped to return quite a new man. He mentioned that the directors had decided at one time to consigu the out- ■ put of the factory to their own Home manager, but as exceptional prices had ruled for buying outright the directors had endeavored to take advantage ol the market, and they still hoped to 'take advantage of those prices, but in the meantime the matter was left in abeyance. The cost of manufacture had increased, but this was unavoidable in view of the increased price of requirement* and the increase of wages brought about by the employees' union. Last year in fuel alone there was an increase of £4O. but suppliers must, remember they could not have, the profit at both ends. and in raising the price at which they delivered firewood to the factory they must of necessity increase the cost of manufacture by thai amoun'.
In answer to Mr. Simpson, Mr. Brown said they sold cream to anyone who wanted it and came to fetch it. but unfortunately the sales were only s maii. So far as he was concerned, he wished they couid sell the whole lot of the cream, as the profit was much greater, as their manager could tell them. On reference to the manager, he said the profit on the cream sold as cream was nearly a third more than if made into 1 butter.
Jlit* report and balance-sheet wi'i'c adopted. Messrs. ISrown and Marshall, tin- rewere re-elected without opposition Thy chairman'- honorarium was in - creased from t,i to CI.). Mr. Stevem moved the re*olution. of which he liad given notice. to pay per cent. interest oil nil paid-up capita. .Mr. Mar-hall s ceoiidfil. A short dis-cn-sion followed, and the motion on being put was lost. Mr. Ilopson wav re-elected auditor at the same remuneritioii as before, ft was resolved to l-ffji-s----ter the company under the C'o-operali\e Daily Coni])anies Act.
