SOCIAL PROBLEMS OF THE DAY. Loudon, October 7. The Bishop of Manchester, in his inaugural address to the Church Congress at the Freetrade llall, touched on the commercial depression and the prevalence of unemployment. He urged the Congress to discus,, social problems. Alluding to visionary schemes for social reconstruction, the Bishop remarked that sin was the mountain barring the path to the Land of Promise. He added: "The Church's distinctive contribution to tllie solution of the world's perplexities must lie with her ability to inspire a living hope for tha removal of this barrier. Why should not our age witness another great religious revival*" AUSTRALIAN SOCIAL LEGISLATION Received 9, 0.10 a.m. London, October 8. Tiie Archbishop of Melbourne addressed the Church Congress relative to the aims and results of the social legislation in Australia, especially Victoria. The Times compliments the Archbishop upon liia deeply interesting review and his occasional warnings, gathering emphasis from his evident •ympathy for the workers.
