Deeley .piloted six iviwiois at the Avondale meeting, Tiie llawke's Bay epring meeting takes pl-aoe on Wednesday and Thursday next.
Mr. Jervia George's share of the spoil at Avondale was the winnings of the San Fran gelding Waihuka. Gold Thread, who showed such brilliant form over short courses last season curries top weight in the Flying Handicap. There was a, horse named Darkness running in the Maiden Hurdles at Avondale, aud he ran true to his name, fail-1 jug to " come to light" 1 | 'in calling upon California to give Aborigine 1-ilbs. in the King Edward ihandicap. Mr. Henrys pays the San .Fran eo.t a high, compliment. Australian papers advise that Artillerie lias been uacked for the Kpsoiu Handicap to the -extent of £BU,t}Uo, which reads something like a plunge. The New Zealand Cup candidate Uii-| lando was given a run in the Marangai Handicap at uangtanui, but like the man who iell out oi the motor-car he—wasn't in it. ,
A forward move. Consequent on increased totalmtor returns the Woodviile ltacing Olui> have to increase tteir stakes by each race benefiting by from £IU to £*io.
■Mark Time, who had the serviced oi ''Tartan" Julian, started a warm order for the Maiden 'Hurdles, but after running prominently for a mile the "good thing'' faded away U> the rear, or kept marking time or something, it being Dominion Day.
Indian buyers are busy paying over the shekels for successful lilliputians, and the stream of Australasiau ponies on their way to the tropic clime Hows on with increasing vigour. The latest to depart for the land of the KajaU is Uocky, by the New Zealand Cup-winner .Waiuku, who lias been winning ire- i quently in Australia of late. Ihe price mentioned was £3OO.
The disappointing (jleuuilin ran a solid rate in the Higgie Handicap at \\angauui on Saturday last. Air. H. Eva's liorse was paying a fair price, and with ordinary luck might have changed places with the winner, lie was the first to come at All Ked in the straight, aud that after being badly blocked on two occasions. At the distance Glenulliu was easing on the leader when a bump spoiled whatever chance he had, and a good third was the best position the local horse could gain. A good Handicap should come his way shortly.
, From all aides comes warm praise for the brilliant handling of Taitoko by Charlie Jenkins in the Alarangi Handicap, the concluding event at Wauganui. ■The Poiirua prad drew .a position next the rails, and Jenkins was in front from the word l 'Go!" At the diead of ithe straight Olfiver got to work on 'Frisco, and the New Zealand CupT.'inner responded gamely. It was a great race home. At the distance they were dead level, and neck and neck they raced to the winning-post. With only a dozen lengths to go, 'Frisco: showed in front, and it looked a,good .bet on the top-weight. Then Jenkins got to work. One, two, three! whistled ithe whale-bone, and riding with hands and heels Taitoko rushed up dead level again, and by a mighty effort gained a half-head victory. It was a great linish. A line achievement of a game ho! s» and a brilliant horseman.
• *llre following tale of a queer b"t comes—from America, of course. One of tlie most prominent American po ifticians is the millionaire li Fingy " Coulters, the chairman oi tlie Democratic State Committee of Xew York, llis fuliier bought a public-house near the docks at Buffalo in the very centre of a large Irish colony, and by the tune lie was twenty-five " fftngy " had made himself known as "the stoutest man in a free figlit, the merriest roisterer on ft spree, the toughest keeper of a tough fcaloon, m all the dock region." How he won his nickname U thus related:— ■He and a playmate were boasting back and forth of their nerve. "Aw, I bet you/' said the playmate, "you ain't got the noive to let me chop you fingy." M I bet you ain't got the noive to chop it," said Conners. They got a cleaver. Conner* laid Ins hand on the block—and they .both won. Down the street ran Jimmy Oonners, waving the stump and yelling: "He chopped me fingy! He chopped me fingy!" The Australian Jockey CluVa spring meeting opens at Bandwick to-day, and with quite a. number of Maoriland horses engaged, the gathering will attract the attention of sportsmen in all parts of the Dominion. The A.J.C. Derby has drawn a splendid crowd of ■three-year-olds, the finest carded for many years, and amongst their number is Goldcu Slipper, the high-priced daughter of Multiform. The price paid for her, 4500 guineas, was o sensational one, end her new owner certainly took oil a great risk when he paid such a tancy price in the sale-ring at Valdhurst. ■Whether he will ever get it back or not 5s a moot question, but it is certain that *he will have to prove heiself a "smasher'' if she is to pick up her purchase money in w.f.a. events across the Tasman this reason. She will be up against the best, and will have to iwat, not one good ojh\ but a dozen fliers who can "scale" as fast as a man con clap his hands. To-dav's Derby field is a very select one. though not numerically strong, and in addition to Golden Slipper includes Mr. fi. Patterson's Leander iHotehkiss—Miss Dclaval): Orcus (full-brother to Poseidon); Parsee, who ran a good secoid to Virtu in the Spring Stakes at Ro*»hill recently; and Mother Goose, a good winner at two years. Banna and Peterhof. "Mr. D. -T. Price's pair of Stepuiak youngsters, were left in by mistake, and were withdrawn last week. A \ictory for Golden Slipper would be hailed "with enthusiasm bv New Zealanders. but all" 1 has yet to prove her ability to fctey out a solidly run twelve furlongs, and he. showing in the Spring Stakes <at Bosehill does not impress one with •the idea that she i* very forward in condition just now. When she left our shores she did. not bear a particularly well-trained appearance, and she has hardly been long enough in Xew South •Wales to find her legs. Tn the Spring Stakes, one mile, she was one or' the first awav from the harrier, and van prominently for four furlongs, fading away to 'iourtli position by the time the winning post wa* reached. Under the circumstances she would be better suited by sprint events, in which Multiform's daughter should keep the best of them busy, but her prospects of success in the IMue Riband event do not •strike one a s being particularly brilliant.
The E|>som flaii'lone liiilo, is Jie next event- of importance oil to-dav's programme. Wsiipuim list., Sea Kill'.' and Seddun 7.13, SonH'""« 7.12. Maranui 7.11, and Artillerie 7.0, are a slashing crowd of Maorilandf-r.-, ami wi*h ordinnry luck the race should come our way. Waipuna'- record in Australia reads like a hard-luck story (tliroe seconds), and Seddon. has fared no loiter. But Soultline, 'who carried 9.3 to •victory in the Camellia. Stakes, won his race in brilliant style from a very select field, and is evidently in great heart just now. Maramii and Artillerie Kivo at times shown fpeat pace, and are worthy member* at the New '/■ aland contingent. The other events contain a -prinkliiiu' of Aeolus 10..1. and Pretty Maid lil.'l. are in tlie Hurdles: Artillerie ill the Trial S*ti<kc»; Ooss flattery. Waipuna, Mnranui. ami Ke.ldon in the Spring flakes : and Frederick .".nd e eddon in tin- Kensing! ,'.n Handicap. P>ut, the majority of these latter ones will most likely start in the Epsom Handicap.
