DEA/TH OK NEW ZEALAND SCULPTOR. By Telegraph —Press Association. ClirisUdiurch, iaisl Night. The, death occurred tliis morning iu Christclmrch of Mr. Onirics Kidson, tlic foremost sculptor of New Zealand, after an illness of some duration. The deceased gentleman completed his art studies iu England, and then wvnt to Melbourne. Tie afterwards came over, to New Zealand and took up a post as instructor at tile School of At\. Although the late Mr. Kidson had done a, considewh!,, amount, of color work, It was sculpture that most attnn'tal him, and he relinquished the appointment in order that lie might have fuller opportunities to pursue that branch of art of which he liven me so conspicuous an ornament. The first work of his to. attract attention was a magnificent bust of the late Hon. 11, ,1, seddon. Ml'. Kidson was a frequent exhi- | liitor at the Art Society's E\hibi tion, and the memory of a delightful little study of a child's head at the exhibition of last year, entitled "Daughter of .Eve," will long remain with lovers of art. Mr. Kidson's most recent worfc was a bust of the late Sir John Hall, completed only a few weeks ago. The deceased gentleman leaves a widow and young family of four children.
RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION. Palmerston N., Last Night. At a large Sunday School demonstration at the Opera House to-night the Governor distributed the prizes to the successful scholars at the recent Wellington examinations. His Excellency delivered a stirring addre;., on we necessity of religious instruction. He pointed out how the Turks and Japanese, with inferior religions, were prepared lo sacrifice themselves and die for tlveir belief. Therefore Christians, with their noble religion, should do all they could to assist its teachings .
