ALLEGED OFFENSIVE BUCKS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Uhrixtchurch, Last Night. G-. 11. Whiteombe, of Whiteombe and Tombs, booksellers, was charged with selling an immoral book, to wit, "Venus and Adonis, 1 ' the poem by William Shakespeare.. The sale of the book was admitted. Mr. Alpers. for the prosecution, said Ore charge was laid at the instance of leading booksellers in Christcluirch to ascertain their rights under the. Offensive Publications Act. Maav had books on their shelves which in some ways might be worse than those for which young men were convicted on Tuesday. Alongside "Venus and Adonis," "Six W omen" was chaste as ice. "Venus and Adonis" was not a classic, hut the crude work of a ■hoy, and when Shakespeare was convicted of poaching. For the defence, Mr. Wright said The action was brought to show the utter absurdity of applying the Offensive Publications Act to tire literature of the Dominion. After a lengthy consurlation, the Bench of two Justices dismissed th e ease.
