SENSATIONAL ACCIDENT.
EXPRESS TRAIN SAIASHES INTO A MOTOR, Call. MIRACULOUS ESCAPES OF THE OCCUPANTS. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Paliucrston N., Last JMignt. A sensational motor ear accident occurred iiti-B, 0 ,, Saturday, , when .the? south express collided, with a 12-H ■Singer motor car containing Mr. v Whishaw, a well-known land n"cnt i and Mrs. Rollct, and her six-yearold i son. Thvi party were returning to ■ I'Vilding from Wellington, and the car was going fast towards the Alexandra street level crossing wncn tne acment occurred. Mr. Whishnw didn't sec the train till nearly in the main street. when h-e put brakes full on, ploughing . up the road surface. As this couldn't i slop him at the pace, he opened the throttle and tried to pass at speed, slewing as he did so to get the collision behind. The train smashed into the toaitoau, knocking the whole car off the line, and turning it over. Mr. Whishnw and Airs Hollett were thrown clear of the train, but the boy was, h'y some extraordinary means, picked up .by the cowcatcher of the second locomotive and carried for 50 yards. The train was stopped in its own length. The car, all but the ■engine, radiator, and gear-box, was smashed. Air. Whisltaw, who had been thrown in a large iron drain pipe, had two ribs smashed and an ankle sprained. Mrs. Rollett is bruised all over, but has no bones broken. The child has a swollen hvad, black eye, and bruises.
