Melbourne, September 23.
The Federal House of Representatives adopted the Address-in-Reply. The Government was pressed by Messrs Irvine and Watson to give some indication as to liow it intended to finance various scheme undertaken. 'llhey stated that the present outlook in regard to finance was serious. There was little prospect of obtaining more Customs revenue in the next *wo and a-half years than at present. The Premier, Mr. A. Deakiu, promised that the Treasurer would make a statement before the Iron Bonus Bill was gone on with. 'Mil. Deakin moved later ta»t the Iron Bonus Bill should be taken up a the stage at which it had been dropped liißt session.
Unexpected opposition camo from th<s Lalbor side. Mr. J. C. Watson' expressed alarm at the proposal, in the present state of finances to incur an expenditure of £280,000 on an Iron Bonus. He would prefer, with a great many others, that uhe money should bo provided by the imposition of a 12'/,. per cent, duty on iron against foreigners and 10 pw cent, against England. Other Labor members also favored ft duty instead of a bonus. Consideration of tho matter was postponed. Received 24, 0.42 a.m. Melbourne, Last Night.
