THE ENCOI'NTKR IN A GALE. By Telegraph.-Press Association. Nelson, Last Night. The warship Encounter put to sea yesterday owing to the heavy sea running in the Bay consequent on the nortfl-westerly gale, and last nig!it sheltered under D'Urvillc Island. A party of bluejackets landed at French Pass and sent a message to Capt. Tylwr, who had been left ashore at Nelson with 50 liberty men. Owing to the llieavyi sea and gale, the party was inable to return to the vessel", and the boat was blown a considerable distance out to sea. The Encounter's searchlight kept her in view, and another boat was despatched to pick up the castaways. Both returned to the warship after «, long, hard struggle. Rumor magnified the incident to a calamity, it being freely stated that 14 lives had been lost.
