A STRANGE AFFAIR.
JACKSON, THE .BRITISH FOOTBALLER, ARRESTED, By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. One of the original members of the Anglo-Welsh Rugby team which recently toured the Dominion and Australia was F. Jackson, a big Cornish forward. His stay in New Zealand, however, was it short one, as when the team was in Wellington for the second test after the tour of the South Island a cable was sent by the committee of the English! Union recalling Jaekson, against whom allegations of proiessionnlism had been laid. The cable was received on Thursday, 2oth July, and the next day .lackson sailed for Sydney by tho Mailai. On his way home nothing more was heard of liitu until he made a rather noteworthy return to Wellington yesterday, having come back from Sydney again en the Maitai. At present there is con-i skUirable doubt as ao the real facts of the e-we, but it has been gathered that oil the trip over from Sydney trouble arose amongst tlio passengers. A- man named William Lewis is alleged to have obtained from a young fellow passenger the sum of £l3 by means of some card ga.inc. and the young man. being under the opinion that he had been swindled, complained to his fellow passengers. When the vessel reached Wellington the sum of ,£5 was returned to the young man by Lewis, who, it is said, had an idea a fiat he was likely to get into trouble over the atl'air. After the passengers had come ashore, Jackson met Luwis in front of the Post Olliee, and, it is alleged, with a view to seeing justice done to the young mail, grabbed Lewis 1 by the vest and demanded that he should lefund the remaining .€lO. Sergeant 1 Daio and Constable Fleming, who were in the vicinity, came up and asked the two men to go along ito the police station. They did so, and here Lewis had a warrant issued for Jackson's arrest on a charge o't assault. The warrant was executed, and Jackson was brought before Dr. A. McArtluir, S.M., and charged with the offence alleged against him." He was remanded until this morning. and in the meantime Ims been allowed his freedom, having laid down a cash deposit of fa as a bond for his appearance before the Magistrate to-day.
