A. Bennett and Mr. T. M. W'ilford, J\l,l\, that free tichmg rights in all lakes and streams be granted to the .Maoris of the llotormi district at all times of tho ymw. It was feared that if such a right were I conceded in ltotorua, a similar dennud I would be made by .Maoris in all parts °f the Dominion. i\lr. (J. J}. Kitchie [ spoke strongly on the matter,, and stated that if the suggestion of the Rev. Mr. JJennelt weiv carried out, the native* would bo enabled to sweep all the rivers from mouth to source with "lets at. all seasons of the year, and thus clear out every acclimatised fish. After further discussion it was resolved that the secretary and Mr. Kitehio dra.lt a letter of protest to the Government.
