The Council met at 2.30 p.m. The Wetlingtoil-Manawatu Piailway Purchase Bill, Public Bodies' Lease't liill, Inspection of Machinery Amendment- Bill, Impounding Amending Act Amendment Kill, received from Iho House, were read a lirst time. The Fire Brigades Amendment Bill, Mm, and the Destitute- Persons Act Amendment Bill passed their final stages. The Auckland Harbor Hoard Empowering liill, providing "for a loan of 1 C 1,I)I)U,IHII), was read a- second time; 111. | Whakalaue County Act Amendment Bill was read a .second lime; and the Chrisichurch City Betterment Bill, Canterbury' College Empowering Bill, ami Opunak'c Harbor Bill were put through committee and reported. The Lincoln Itnail Board Umpowcring Bill ami New Plymouth Harbor Board Empowering Bill were put through committee, read a third time, and passed. The Council adjourned at 5 p.m.

UKPI.IEK TO OI'I'XTIO.NS. .Ministers, replying to question*, slated that a committee to enquire into the methods adopted by the Press Association in charging heavy fee's to newspapers before they are allowed to par-1 ticipate in the use of telegraphic news will lie. set up next year; that the (lovcriiinent has decided to appoint a local commission to enquire into and report on the question of import duty on timber in connection with the sawmilling industry; that the railage charges for timber cannot oe reduced at present.
