SUSPECIED INFANTICIDE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Cliristchurch, Last Might. The body of a male imant was iound on the bank of the Avon river at iSur«ood yesterday. It appears that llcr'bert JJownes was out hunting hares when li's dog, which was near the bank of "'the river, began to bark, and on going over, he discovered the boay ol '« male child, lying face downward., witih a string round the neck. The body had been in the water some time. At the inquest to-day Constable llowe stated that in response to a message he visited the locality where the body was found. The string was three or four time doubled round the neck, and the end appeared as if a weight had Itcen tied to it, and had broken away. Dr. Irving, who made a post mortem I exaimination, could not say definitely ' if the child had ever lived . The body .was fully developed, and newly-bor:i, but was in a very decomposed state, and some of the parts were missing. The string was not tight round the lteck, though it had cut deeply into the llesli. The child had been dead too long to say whether' the string had been put there during life. The child bad been properly born. A verdict was returned that the body had been found on the bank of the river, but there was 110 evidence to show how it got there. FIRES. Christchurcli, Last Night. A fire occurred about 1.20 this morning in a building situated in Hereford street, occupied by the Remington Typewriter Co.; \V. llarvie. artist; Marshall's Proprietary Co.,.Sims, Cooper and Co. and \\. W. Davis, dentist. The portion tenanted by Mr. llarvie was completely burned, while the rooms occupied by Marshall were slightly damaged before the brigade extinguished the fire. llarvie was insured for d-HoO in the New Zealand Insurance Co.; the others are not obtainable. LAISOII LEAGUE "CANDIDATES. Duncdin, Last Night. Tlie Political Labor League lias decided to nominate Mr. R. 11. Douglas for the Duaedin South seat (now held by Mr. T. K. Sidey) at the general ejection, and Air. J. \V. Monro for Duncdin West (now represented by the lion. .1. A. Millar), Mr. McLaren, of Wellington, wrote declining to accept nomination for Duncdin West. The league decided to recommend W. Barr to iHie workers of Chalmers, and J. T. Johnson to the workers of Taieri electorate.

COMPETITION IN ORATORY. Wellington, Last Night. On Saturday evening, the fourth annual contest took place for the medal presented by his .Excellency. 'tM Governor for competition among members of the Victoria College Debating Society. In accordance with the conditions, the contestants' speeches were on some man or woman of note in history. Each one was allowed twelve minutes for his oration, D. S. Smith, who spoke on John l-lampden, was the winner. A DELAYED ADJUSTMENT, Eltliam, Saturday Night. When the Hlthain county was formed out of the Hawera county, there was a number of special loans, and tile question of liability for special rates has since been in dispute between the two bodies. -The Elthani Council has now asked llawera to co-operate in stating a case regarding the loans for the Supreme or Appeal Court.

J FEILDING CHAMBER OF COM- | MERCE. Feilding, Last Night. The annual report of the Feilding Chamber of Commerce, which has teen published, congratulates the town on being a main stopping place for the .Main Trunk express, which shows the district's claims were recognised. The opening of the through line to Auckland and the Government's acquisition of the Manawato line, must prove important factors in iho advancement of the commercial and producing interests of .the coast and interior. An endeavor is to be made to make the Feilding railway station a trucking depot. The Preen Island lignite industry is likely to receive a great impetus by a scheme formulated by the local eoileries lo erec'fc a powerful electric plant to supply the mining companies and Runedin factories. Tt is proposed to use slack, hitherto buried as waste, to generate the power. The scheme, which is practically assured, will' improve the condition of 'the mines.
