Possible trouble is feared as a result of Germany, through her iiugiurou, requesting tile Moorish (ioiernnient to release Kuid Ermiki, one of the tirst northern Governors who adopted the ilalidiiui cause. Tile European Lega-* tions luive claims arising from his robberies and extortions. His arrest occurred at the instance of Mulai Hafid's coinmander-in-chicf, after Ermiki's proceedings at Lurache necessitated armed European intervention. His'nephew, a German portege, was released, and thereupon Germany claimed tile Kaid's release, and showed a list of seven members of the Kaid's family as being German protected subjects. Min'ebhi replied that the Kaid was solely a Moorish official and not a protege, and that Germany was overstepping her rights. Germany's excuse is that the Kaid served Mulai Hafid's interests well.
