FOG-SIGNALLING. By Telegiaplu—i'resa Association. Chiistchurch, Last Night. The fog-signalling apparatus at Godley Head is practically finished, and was yesterday inspected and passed by Mr. H. Lewis, engineer to the Public Works Department. The apparatus is not yet in commission, as the regulation ammunition has not been secured, and the periodicity of the shots has not been fixed. At' present experimental charges are available, and the period is (tain 20sec. A supply of explosives is expected to arrive by the Hinemoa, {toon.
A DISTRESSING CASE. Christchurc'n, Last Night. A very distressing case was discussed At yesterday's meeting of the Samaritan Home trustees. It was stated that an unfortunate man 'had been committed from the Magistrate's Court to the Home suffering terribly from consumption and had since died. A member ol the Board said that it was discreditable to a community which was prepared to spend thousands upon a sanatorium, that th'e Magistrate had no Other course open but to send such a OM to the Samaritan Home where 'there were no facilities for looking after it.'.The matron had had to appoint One of the inmates to nurse the man, who was so bad that the doctor entered him to be isolated. Such a Que deserved emphasis. The chairman Btated that such a case woidd not bare been taken into tie sanatorium, And the hospital would not dare to take it. The case was one of those unfortunate ones that were very hard to ffcpOM of.

Mr. T. W. Kirk, Government Biologist, is at present on a visit to the district, and in the course of an interview with
ft representative of the Colonist to-dav he gave a general denial to the statements that the requirements of the inspectors had been unduly harsh. The examination made showed that of 70 properties in the province affected 61 were situated in Toi Toi Valley, a portion of the city which was crowned .with small gardens, and the pest had been found on trees in back gardens, ffhe inspectors had not exceeded the requirements of the situation.
ART EXHIBITION. Palmerson N., Last Night. The first exhibition of the Manawatu Art Society was opetaed to-night l»y nis Excellency the Governor. soner at Point Halswell, escaped yesterday and was at large for some time. Ultimately lie was re-captured by the police. To-day lie was sentenced to three months' extra imprisonment.
