TOLSTOI AND HIS WRITINGS
THE HOLY SYNOD OFFENDED. St. Petersburg, September 6. The Russian Holy Synod pronounced Count Leo Tolstoi a backslider and ordered true believers to refrain from participating in t'lie celebrations of his SOtli birthday. The Synod also directed the priests to refute Tolstoi's writings. SYNOD'* ACTION CONDEMNED, Received 7, 11.47 p.m. St. Petersburg, September 7. The Russian newspapers severely censure the Synod's decree against Count Tolstoi.
