SPORTSMEN AND POLITICS.
THE AMERICAN BETTING LAW. New York, uAgust 28. Sportsmen are strenuously opposing the re-election of Mr. Hughes as tjovenor of the State of New York, in consequence of his having passed the law prohibiting betting on racecourses. Mr. Hughes attended a trotting meeting at Saratoga. Competition, on learning of his presence, declined to race till he withdrew. He waited in ■*c stnnd for .in hour and then cony seated to depart.
