A NARROW ESCAPE. By Telegrapn.— i u:aa Association. Wauganui, Lust Night. ' A man named Eraser, attendant, at 1-iiu hospital, nearly lost his life yesterday. At about 11 o'clock two fishermen in u boat saw a man lying in the water o.i the river beaeli near the hospital, lie was waving a hand, and, the fishermen, on going to his assistance, found him almost drowned. The man explained thai he aad felt ill, and wont to the beach for a walk, when he became dizzy and fell down. He was powerless to move, and the rising tide covered him. When found, the man was unable to use his legs, and had to I be carried to the hospital.

At the inquest on the body of ,lames Carter, found dead in bed at Sawyer's Bay with a pea-rifle by h>is side and a bullet wound in his head, the medical evidence showed that the deceased had been treated for cancer in the tongue and lower jaw. The deceased underwent an operation for this disease about a month ago, but refused to submit to another on Thursday. However, he consented to go to Dunedin on the following day for X-ray treatment. The jury returned a verd'et that tlie deceased died from a gunshot wound, self-inflicted while in a state of temporary insanity.
