James McLean, railway guard, attempted suicide by swallowing two doses of match heads. The doctor arrived ia time to administer remedies. McLean was removed to the hospital in a weak state. lie is now making a good recovery. Falmcrston N., Tuesday. A man, whose name is at present unknown, made a determined attempt to', commit suicide this morning. He went into a hotel, called for a glass of brarcdy, drank it, and immediately swallowed the contents of a two-ounce bottle of spirits of salts. Emetics were administered, and the man, who it a stranger, was taken to the hospital. He refused to divulge bis name, but said trouble was the came of his act, and (bat "he had a wife and four children. He is in a critical state. A FATAL FALL. Dunodra, Last Night. William Ross Ml from a house a 0 Slmg Valley on 23rd inst., and died ia the Dunedin Hospital to-day from concussion of the brain. He never regained consciousness after the accident.
