Operations at the Oil and Freehold Company's bore at Vogeltown are becoming distinctly encouraging.- Yesterday the bore was pumped out, and there was an undoubted show of oil, both on the rope and in the spoil brought up from tiie bottom by tlr; pump. The bore is down nearly 700/ feet, and for some days the manage;' has had repeated shows of oil, im-. proving as the bore became deeper. It has been found ia hard papa, indicating very strong pressure from large oil deposits below. On Tuesday lie passed through a strata of aqueous gravel, evidently not of volcanic origin, and yesterday he was in hard stratum again, but the pump lorced its way into Soft country again, the extent of which remains to be seen. Mr. Balloeh j is very well pleased with the country from an oil-bearing point of view,.'." though from a purely drilling standpoint it is less satisfactory, since n is slow work getting through it. lie is not a man to express a definite opinion or to hazard a prophecy—it doesn't do, he Says "to halloa till you are out of the wood," but he is pleased with the country. More than that lie cannot say, but shareholders will doubtless be glad to know this, and that the work is now proceeding satisfactorily.
