IMPROVING COMMUNICATION.
| By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The Government steamer Tutanekui is having a f«w alteration made ia Iter cable gear preparatory to carrying out cubic-laying operations between G-eat Barrier Island and tilic mainland. The cable will arrive from London at Auckland towards tlie end of next month by the lvia Ora. It is a single core cable, weighing six tons to the knot, and about fifteen knots will be required for the work. The Tutanckai will fftobnbly come to Auckland to tranship the cable at that port to save time. The cable will run from, Trypihona on the south-western -"id if the Great Barrier, to Port Cliiirlci, which is about 40 miles frj'n the Thames. Tlie cable will connect by land lines via Coromamlel and Thames, Telegraphic communication, both for use to shipping and the settlers on the island, has been recommended for fOHi.i time.
