INTERESTING FIGURES. In 100.) Mr. Herdman asked hi Parliament for a return showing (a) the total number of civil servants in the employ of the Crown on Match bi WO4; (b) the number of temporary) dorks, and (c) the number of persons other than civil servants, temporary clerks and school teachers; but including men employed on public works, in receipt, of pay from the Crown. The return furnished disclosed a total of 22,(31). The Government Departments since then —four years a"o —Jiai'e increased considerably' and more casual hands have been' employed. School teachers arc not included' ill the return, the railway employees have largely increased, ami the post and telegraph figures have gone up by over one thousand. The total number may, therefore, be givfcn as nearer 40 000 than 30,000,

Another return supplied at Mr. Herilman's request gave the total I wages paid to the 22,73!) employees for i the year 11)03-5 (again excluding State i school teachers).
