RUN OVER By A TRAIN
A DISTRESSING FATALITY. By Telegraph—Pi ess Association. Uroymoufh, Last Night. A fatal accident of a ve-ry distressing nature occurred this morning, wiicn a young man named Wm. Bird, aged. 28 years, was run over by a ballast train. The trucks were being loaded on an incline, when they started to move oil'. Deceased tried to put on the brake when Ire slipped and the wheel went over his legs. He was taken to the hospital where both legs were amputated. At six o'clock this evening he died. Deceased leaves a wife and two young children,
THE WELLINGTON FATALITY!. Wellington, Last Night. The man knocked down and killed by a train at Wellington last night, proves to have been Charles Davis, a usherman, of Makara. At the inquest 10-day Ihu driver of the engine, James uarr, said just before the accident the lireman, William O'Brien, said to him: "Slop, Jim; there's a mini crossing in front of the engine." Steam was shut oil, and the brakes were applied. No hump was noticed, hue witness felt that something was dragging. 'The train was travelling at the usual pace, 15 or 20 miles an hour. It was pulled up within 100 yds. Daniel Lane, a driver, identined deceased, who he believed was
a widower with no children. The deceased had been drinking heavily, and was intoxicated between 4 and 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon. I'ke jury found a verdict of accidental death, no blame being attachable to the engine-driver or fireman. FATAL TRAM ACCIDENT. Auckland, Last Night. A man, Edward Wilson, who was seriously injured in a train accident i" Khyber Pass on Tuesday afternoon, died at the hospital at S.IiO a.m. to-day. Wilson, who was by occupation a driver, was struck by a tmrncnr whilst he was emerging on 'to the main road from mi alley near the Captain Cook Brewery.
