Mr. John McLaughlan, M.P. for Ashburton, who came to Auckland by the Parliamentary train last Saturday evcnni" to participate in the welcome to the"American fleet, has since ( his arrival been seriously ill, and now lies in a critical condition at a hospital suffering from pneumonia. Inquiries madethis evening elicited the information that the member for Ashburton's condition was unchanged. AUCKLAND UNEMPLOYED. Auckland, Last Night. The secretary of the Amalgamated Union of Carpenter* and Joiners states, with regard to the labor report—"There are altogether 18 tradesmen, including carpenters, bricklayers, plasterers, aud painters out of work, i.e., union men, and that there are at presvnt 30 carpenters on the books of the union out of work." He adds: "Our trade in Auckland is in a deplorable position at the present time." FIRES. Auckland, Last Night. A fire occurred this morning in the premises occupied by Mr. Grcensilk, importer, and Maxwell and Montague, in the hall of the Commerce Buildings, damage to the extent of £ISOO being done Tlie contents were insured in the Royal Company for £2OOO, and the buildings for £9OOO in the New Zealand Insurance office. Oamaru, Friday. The fire at Mrs. Coupar's fruit shop, Suppressed last night, broke again this morning, and, with the adjoining building, occupied bv VeSey, a carpenter,was destroyed. 'The insurances amount to £450. DUNEDIN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Dunedin, Last Night. At a meeting of the Chamber oi commerce, Mr John Mill expressed the opinion that tlie Chamber should support the Government in its endeavor to bring out Suitable immigrants. The following resolution was carried: That this Cliamber urges upon the Government the reasonable claims of the Otago provincial district for speeding the extension of tlie Otago Central, Catlms, Tahakopa, and Lawrence-Rox-burgh railways, and that the completion of the North Island Main Trunk, railway should be followed by an adequate vote for the prosecution of theseworks.
DELAYED B¥ STOKMS. Auckland, Last Night. A Suva cable states that the steamer Suva arrived to-day, three days overdue. She had been delayed by storms. AKBITKATION COURT. Invercargill, Last Night. At the Arbitration Court to-day the sawniillers' case was concluded. The Court reserved its decision. SLY-UEOG SELLING. Invercargill, Last Night. At the Police Court to-day, tihe adjourned hearing of lire case against Frank Poll' resulted in his conviction of having assisted in the unlawful sale of whisky, for which he was sent' to gaol for three months. Hose Poll',' convicted last week of sly-grog selling, was sentenced to one montlli. John Fahey, charged with conveying liquor for saie, was fined 30s. j
