REASSURING REPLIES. The disturbing rumor; published fivst , by the Taihape Times, that the ••Black" tunuel on the Main Trunk line between Toi Toi and Mangawekn is in a ve'-y unsafe condition, finds no acceptance in official quarters. The allegation is that a hole exists in the tunnel, through which the waters of the Rangitikei Hiver can he seen. Mr. 11. W. Holmes, Engineer-iu-Chief to the Public Works Department, states that (live is a hole through the Hank of the innml. but it. was bored, according to a common . ..»- loin, for the ejection of the tuim.'l spoil, and is in no way a source of danger. The Railway Department, which has charge of this portion of the line, has received no information that anythrig is the matter with the tunnel, though, together with the permanent way, it u inspected every morning by a competent man, and further inspected once a wee,< by a railway gang and officer in chargi. —Dominion.
