THE ATONEMENT.
REV.. J. GIBSON SMITH'S BOOJC.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Tuesday, the Rev. J. Gibson Smith's book on the Atonement was referred to to-day at the regular meeting of the Wellington Presbytery, of which tihc author is Moderator. The Rev. J. Kennedy ElIfetfi gave notice to move an overture of considerable length, netting forth: "That all Christendom holds aaS teaches that Christ by His obedience satisfied Divine justice; that this Presbyterian Church holds and proclaims this Bamo doctrine as set forth in our standards (passages cited from tie Wustminster Confession and the larger and shorter catwlii(ins); that every minister and ftldfer solemnly undertakes constantly to maintain and defend the same doctrine; that, as a minister of the Church has published a book in which ho emphatically and with scorn denies the truth of the said dootrine, this Presbytery resolves to overture the General Assembly of tSie Chuwh to meet at Dunedin on November 10; that, for the upholding of the testimony of the Church, for the stability of the saints in their faith, and for the maintenance of the Church's position before the world, it is highly expedient to re-affirm and anew declare this Church's adherence to the doctrine of her standards in such terms as to the wisdom of the Geneml Assembly may seem meet." The date for the discussion of tho overture was not settled.
