DAIRY FACTORY MEETINGS
TAItJLKI. i (i-'roiii Our Own Correspondent). The first annual mooting of tho Tariki | Dairy Company was held on Thursday t evening, and was largely attended. Mr. \ Knowles, chairman of directors, presided. I The director*' report stated that the i factory opened on Ist August, 15107, and « cheese was made until 30th April, l!MJ8, totalling 11)4 tons. butter was made during; May and June amounting to about 4'/a tons. The quality of the i cheese had been most satisfactory, the reports from Home having been very favorable. The directors had arranged for an additional receiving-stage at the factory so as" to avoid the risk of milk heating through delay ill taking in milk; also for additional whey tanks and increased store-room for requisites. They had also arranged for a complete installation of curd-agitators, and wore confident that there would be a considerable saving of labor in consequence. The services of Air. McElroy as manager and Mr. \V. \i. IVrcival as secretary had been retained for tho current year. The chairman, in moving the adoption of Vlie report and balance-sheet, said the balance-sheet was a very great disappointment. to both directors and shareholders, and the directors had been quite unable lo account for the result shown. They had written to the (Government expert- <m the .-.abject, and they suggested, as did their manager, that it \va>, at any rate in part, due to too fast vats—that is, to milk being too ripe when taken in; ho did not mean that it was sour, ! but was just on the verge of being syur, and this was to. some extent owing to the slow taking in of Ihe milk, allowing it to become heated in the cans while waiting to be taken in. They had removed this possible cause by erecting a second milk-stage, so that there would not be any delay in the future. Th<>n . there was the question of test. Their milk had been of too high lest for pro- « dueing the greatest "quantity of cheese. f although, no doubt, the quality was the > better, but it did not make a better ;• price in the l/mdon market, and. there- . fore, was no advantage to them as .-shareholders. Wherever the fault was, it was not in their stall', for they did their best, and turned out an excellent article. The statistics showed that the test had averaged 4.1.3, and the output showed 2..'131b of cheese to lib of butter-fat, which, the chairman said, was not siilliciont. lxnvgarth on a XB7 test produced over 2'/alb to lib of butter-fat, aud Cardiff 2%lb* Messrs. Knowles and Saywell wen' elect- •> ed to the directorate.
