WHAT A GOOD COW CAN DO

••(.ItA.N.NVS (iilil.'' TJiSTKI). From lime to time reports have been given of I lie marvellous bittlcr-prodm-ing capabilities id' "Cranny's Girl,'' .Messrs. ((rillilhs and Corn wall'* line .Icr.sev cow. se records have oeen doubted as lacking corroboration or rerliliciile by other than the owners, So Ihe latter arranged for a two day-' performance lo be registered and cerlilied bv the Tai'iimiki Agricultural Society. ' The president (Mr! W. Ambury) iberefore authorised a committee, consisting of Alv-Ssrs, I- A. Nolan, L. C". Sliulden. F. Fagan, J;. J'alnier, and A. 11. l'attie, to watch "(iranny's Girl" being milked on live successive occasions. These niilking's commenced on the Kith ult., and the sub-couunittee has now furnished the following ollieial report to the president of the A. and V. Society under Tuesday's date;— "We Here present at live successive, milkings. the first being on the morning of Monday, .Inly 13th, at 7.(10 a.m.. when •Granny's Girl' was milked dry —this being'the starting point of t'ii'o teHl. The next, four nUlkings took place punctually at 5.(10 p.m. and 7.(10 a.m. on the Kith 14th, and loth (inclusive). At the evening milking on the KJth, Mr 11. W. 1). 'Robertson (manager for ,1. 15. MacEwan and Co.") was present, and instructed us how to iai;e a correct sample for testing purposes.

The duly of taking the sample was afterwards carried out by ilr. Niiildeii, great caio being exorcised in pouring tlio milk back and lore from one bucket to another, as directed by Jlr. llnbcrtson. When the Mimples were drawn lifter eacli milking they were placed in a half-pint snmpio holllc which was then lucked up in u lin box, Hie key for which was entrusted to .Mr Madden. On the 2111.1 i inst, the complete sample was delivered by .Mr. Sladdeu to Mr. Kulhcrford (manager.of tile Hell JJlock I ])airy Factory) who consented to test it. From t'hc time that the sample

was lirst taken on the 13tli until it was delivered to Mr Kuthei'ford, it was locked up and, the key remained in Mr. Sladdcn's possession ,tlms rendering it quite impossible fur the sample to be tampered with. Immediately after each" 1 milking the milk was careiully weighed, and the test resulted as follows: — lb. .lulv l:i Inighll .. 17.1).-) ', .lulv 1-1 (morning) .. 24.00 July 14 (night) .. 20.40 July IS' (morning) .. 2">.2"> 57.00 Thus, making an average daily weight of 4:>.Solbs of milk. Mr Kiitiierford has reported that the milk tested exactly (i per cent, of fat. The Iwo days' milk therefore contained .">.&-> 11 is of butterfat." Mr. KuthcnordV report to Mr. Amburv reads: "I tested the sample of 'milk which was handed to me ny Mr. L. C. Sladden on the 20th inst. with our factory llabcock tester and the sample shown was exactly (i per cent, of butter fat."

In other words, the yield is equivalent to IS.H'.llbs of butter-fnl. or 21.4(1 lbs of churned butter for a week. '•Cranny's tlirl" lias been grazed and ni""vd in the ordinary way, and not. housed at all except in milking time. When these points are taken into consideration, together with the fact that tire weather has been so cold, that there is little nourishment in the grass, and that '•Cranny's Girl" has only been fed a ration of jmv.and about lib of bran and lib of crushed oats at, each milkin.' the result is -a wonderful one. She was bred bv Mr. W ■ 1". Cornwall, and descends from a rich butter' strain, bein" a "Jersey Boy" out of Unit grand old cow "Cranny." In addition to uiving such excellent records as a milk er. ' r Orannv\s Girl'' is also a typical specimen of what is now generally admitted to be one of the most popular breeds of dairy cattle, much sought after bv progressive dairymen. '•'Granny's Girl" prodiicwd during the twelve months of lier last milking period the remarkable record of li7.">lbs of butler-fat.
