A CORRECTION.

(To tin- Editor.) Sir, —It- has lati'ly conn- lo my know* ledge that a tcli-gram, and local commenting on it, which appeared in your columns some time since contained an error which <{uiU' alteivd the inference drawn by your local. It was in connection with a sly-grog selling ease at- invercargill. On 23rd June the Press Association telegram, in reporting the case, stated that " The police had evidence j that 117 gallons of beer and SO eases o: whisky had taeu sold since April 18th, and probably that was ouly half or quarter of the amount sold.'' Then your local did the multiplication sum aud made it "3211 eases of whisky in two months, or more than the whole of tlr New Plymouth hotels can sell in three months and a halt"." This is quite excusable, as you take Pn;ss Association wires as correct. lint it was not correct in this ease. In the Evening Post of July 13th the correction, is tardily.' brought out in another Press Association telegram: •*' Eight, not eighty," which reads: ''ln the recent conviction of Polls for sly-grog selling, it was inada to appear that eighty cases of whisky had been on the premises. This was a telegraphic error: it should have been eight. The Temperance Party desires this correction, as the erroneous number is being employed to the detriment of [ the No-License cause.Now. sir, L know I that your sense of what is fair on ail controverted questions would not allow you to be a party to any such misrepresentation of facts; and as no correc- , tion lias appeared, I believe, in your paper 1 just ask that, though late. [ the correction may now be made. I * write this presuming that the correcting a telegrpm was not sent to your office.— Yours, &e., GEO. 11. MAUNDER. [. New-Plymouth. 27/7/08.

[The Press Association correction our correspondent mentions was not sent to this office. The correction comes as a surprise; to lis. Had the message been received it would, of course, lia\e been published in the ordinary coiino. -Ed.]
