Gembitisky said that at about 4 p.m., and again in the evening, he saw Mrs. Pearce (tlie woman who alleged 1Z C T eily take Bur te overta Btr ,' ke him '. a nd that o u Bhe , a PPeared to be under the influence of liquor. McLauchlm gave evidence that he »jid from curiosity tried fo identify the people in the shed from the position it was alleged Mrs. Pearce had seen Burke and Connelly, but he had been unsuccessful.
G-. B. Sinclair, the Coroner, said the gaoler, who in his evidence had denied «ay>ng after the verdict at Nelson that ■was a righteous judgment, was wrong m his statement. The gaoler said his statement was made after the inquest wlien the jury returned a verdict that all three were implicated. At that time, he, like every one else, believed Halinen and Andersen guilty but was convinced from their demeanor in gaol and from other information, that they were innocent men, ■ and tfiat Connelly should have been arrested.
George Rennie saw three men at the theatre door at 8 o'clock, but would not swear they were Halinen, Andersen and Haakonsen, and that the three »en he saw go <mt about 8.15 were theße men.
