BRITISH POLITICS.
[ HUSH UNIVERSITIES BILL. ' MR. BIRRELL APPLAUDED. Received 27, 10.50 p.m. London, July 27. In the House of Commons, the Irish Universities Bill was read a third time. Mr. Redmond warmly praised Mr. Birrell for Solving a problem that had foiled the late Mr. Gladstone, and added: "We all admire the man and his courage. Nationalists will never forgj;t Mr. Birrell's services to Ireland."
Amid Nationalist cheers, Mr. Balfour, in a few graceful words, supported Mr. Birrell's proposals, and said the main outlines of the Bill were such as ite had always wished to see passed. It was a great and courageous effort to deal with scandal, but lie feared that owing to the affiliation of Maynooth with Dublin University, the latter might fall unduly under clerical control.
Mr. Birrell hoped the new university would play a great part in educating and unifying a famous race. Last Saturday, the sitting was devoted to the Finance Bill, which was read a third time. Meanwhile the Universities Bill was read a first time in the Home of Lords.
