But California was not beaten .yet, and, (pitting down to his task in great style, he fairly galloped over everything, passing good horses as il they were standing, and in the most sensational linish seen <or many a duy lie just got up in the last stride to beat Dawn by a head. None hut a champion could have won that race as California did, and round »(t»r round of applause greeted the winner on returning to the weighing-machine. California is set lo curry 10.11 In the Winter Oats, and the meeting between the flying chestnut and Sir Frisco should be brimful of interest. Sir Frisco won the Parliamentary Handieap on Satur-
day last in hollow washion, but will have to do his best to-day to finish in front of the newly-found champion. Rangipapa and Dnart, who have be»u showing good form at the meeting, are engaged in the Onslow Handicap. \'asa has recorded two seconds at the Wellington meeting, having- been unlucky enough to meet California and Dr. Slihnose. "Mr. IlighdenV filly ,» top weight in a poor Held which has accepted for the Croflon Handicap. Top Hose finished a good'second to Defeat in the First Hack Hurdles, and was not seen under silk on the second day, but is considered a likely starter in the Third Hack Hurdles this afternoon, (ihoorkn and Immolation ran prominently on Wednesday.
Le Beau will be making his first appearance at the meeting in the July Steeplechase. Kivc acceptors for the Final Hurdles also claim engagements in the Hack Hurdles, so the scratching-pen will probably be freely used in the open event. Compass and Scotty will meet again, the latter having 51b pull in the weights to-day. Silkweb had a very comfortable win in the Thorndon Hack Race, and goes up to 10.13 for the winning effort.
