RESOURCES OF N.S.W.

ADDRESS Hl' SIR JOSEPH CARRUTHERS. AUSTRALIAN FINANCE DEFENDED Received 23, 10.2 p.m. London, July 23. Sir Joseph Cockbiirn presided at Sir Joseph Carruther's address to the Australasian Chamber of Commerce on the position of the resources of New South Wales. Sir Joseph, in a spirited defence of Australian finance, claimed that the whole interest of the public debt was being paid by the net earnings of the public works. Australia was rapidly becoming independent of the London money market. He felt confident Australian people would not tolerate the Commonwealth's disposition to encroachment of the States' proportion of the Customs. He urged Britishers to use Australian wines, which were capable of immense development. He declined to regard Australia's increasing trade with the East as a danger or evil.
