! ™E PROFESSIONAL GAME. By -telegraph.— Press Association. Invercargill, Last XigM. At a meeting to-niglit of about forty people interested in football, it was decided to form a Northern Union League club Enough players are available for tuq teams, and exhibitions will be «iven m districts whence recruits are expected.

TARAXAKI v. JIAXAWATU. Thp intcrprovincial fixture, Taranaki v. Manawatu, to be played at the Kci-ro-ation Grounds this afternoon, promises to provide an interesting display of footwall. Had the home province been represented by the team that met the Britishers the public would doubtless hav<> expected a one-sided encounter. Tara- ,.' *}°J vev er> can be expected to put up a big fight, even though the touring team is a trst-class combination. Colman is the man who will be most missed from the Amber-aud-Black back division in a match of this description. The visiting forwards have a reputation for considerable dash and dribbling ability, and that

our own forwards are "not too slow" was shown last week. Altogether we look forward to an interesting game. The ground is in good order. The heavy rains of Tuesday night and yesterday morning affected the field somewhat, but it was hard-and drv before I that, and the warm sunshine yesterday I early dispelled the pools which had formed near the southern goal. Should no more rain fall prior to the eonmieno.'ment of the match, the ground shouM be m tip-top order. The auxiliary stands erected for last week's match' will be available to-day at an extra charge ol sixpence. The following are the teams to be engaged:— MANAWATU. Full-back—Hodgins. Three-quarters—L. Smith, Hewitt, AI. Carroll. Five-eighths—Amodeo and O'Connor. Half.—Buchanan.

Forwards—Boon (wing), Ward, Alex. McMinn, Carroll, Best, Ryan, Thorburn, Brough.

Emergencies—Fraser, Lowe, MeEwen, Matheson.

TARANAKI. Full-back—Hardgravcs. Three-quarters— D. Hooker, E. Dive, and C. Sheehan. Five-eighths—H. J. Mynott. Half—Thurston. Wing-forwards—T. Sheehan and H. Rothery. Forwards—Whittingtou, Cain, Tainu, Smith, Crowley, O'Sullivan, and Pukere. The match will commence at 3 p.m. The Manawatu representatives.arrived by last night's express train, and are quartered at the Terminus Hotel. • The Taranaki representatives ar? housed at the Red House Hotel.

The Manawatu team to-day will play on its own ground, a wag informs us. It appears that portion of the Recreation Sports Ground was top-dressed with Manawatu (Longburn) soil.

The selection of the referee was left to the Manawatu team, and last night they selected Mr. George Hopkins, of New Plymouth, of whom they had heard before leaving home.

THE ASSOCIATION GAME. Great interest is being taken in the New Plymouth v. Stratford match at Inglewood today. Both clubs are putting the strongest teams available in th" field, and if the day be fine a keen struggle should result. The winners play off with the champions of tie' southern division for the Julian Cup, which trophy is at present held by the New Plymouth Club, and every effort

will be made to retain it for another year. The Union has made excellent arrangements in regard to the fixture;, the ground is in good order, and the seating accommodation has also received attention. ,-

Mr. A. Stapleton (Ilawera) has been appointed referee, and Messrs. W. V. Willis jXew Plymouth) and S. Clark (Stratford) linesmen. New Plymouth will be represented by Broadmore (goa'). Hedley and Arthur (backs), Neave, Colbeck, and Malcolm (halves), Smart, Elliott, Cornish, Newton, and Buliot (forwards). The team travels by the 12.50 p.m. train.
