THE ESPIONAGE SYSTEM. DEPUTATION To'tllE COMMISSIONERS. Received 21, 11.4 a p.m. Sydney, July 21. Keplying to a deputation of tiro Tramway Union which protested against espionage, the Chief Commissioner said careful consideration had been given to the suggestion to enable an accused man to secure evidence in his defence. If the commissioners could see their way to modify the present system, while preserving a ehecK on dishonesty, they would be as glad as the men them* selves to do so, but when the deputation came with their demands as representatives of the men, the ers were unable to depart from the position taken up. The commissioners must be allowed to manage the affairs, of their department in their own way.
MEETING OE THE MEN. SITUATION NOT PROMISING. Received 22, 1.2 a.m. Sydney, July 21. A meeting of the tramway men tonight resolved to again wait on the, commissioners to-morrow. An amendment that a strike be ordered was ne-j gutived. The situation is not promising.
