UNEMPLOYED IN NEW ZEALAND

WORK ON THE MIDLAND RAILWAY By Telegraph,—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The officer in-charge of the local Labor Bureau slates that work on tile, Midland railway and on the West Coast can be found for all who apply. About 100 men put their names down to-day and such as are willing to go will be sent on Thursday morning.

In compliance with the decision ot the City Council at its meeting lasli night, the Works Committee met this afternoon to decide upon the work at which the unemployed shall be put. It was decided to employ on the work of improving the river banks, men who were in urgent need of assistance, and who could not obtain work through tho Labor Bureau. An exami latiou of the list presented to the Council lust night shows that it contains the names of 08 married men and 57 single men. These have 01 dependents. Forty-one Of those whose names appear on the list do not state whether they are married or not, nor how long they have been out of work. There are the names of 82 laborers, 19 carpenters, 7 painters, 7 butchers, 4 gardeners, "> blacksmiths, and a lesser number of hotel employees, bricklayers, cattle-'drivers, tradesmen, general smiths and farriers, plasterers, slaughtermen, clerks, salesmen, pastrycooks, pattern makers, titters, tailors, asphalters, grocers, compositors, and motor drivers. The Mayor has not received any reply from the Premier to the resolutions of the unemployed meeting held on Saturday afternoon, which were forwarded to Wellington.
